Lost time is never found, IT can’t wait, Do IT now

Lost Time is never found

“Lost time is never found again.”

Ben Franklin said that.  The guy definitely had a way with words.  This is a business technology blog, and I don’t want to get philosophical on you guys.  I promise I’ll bring things around to my point, but stay with me for a minute. I want you to stop and think about all the time in your day that is wasted.  We only have so much time on this big spinning rock and we need to make the most of every moment.  Every second we delay making a decision that will improve our lives is another second spend suffering.  We can’t get those seconds back. I’ve been consulting with a lot of businesses lately that have had significant struggles with their IT.  They’ve had downtime.  They’ve had data loss.  They’ve had security breaches.  They’ve had employees that can’t get any work done because their network is down.  They have a terrible provider that they hate working with.  I’m flabbergasted by how unconcerned they seem. Time is money.  You pay your employees for their time.  When they are unproductive you might as well be burning money.  Downtime (for any reason) is burning money multiplied by the number of employees you have.  There are almost no businesses left on this earth that can stay productive without their computers running the way they should.

The Numbers

Let’s just take an example of a typical small business with 50 employees.  Say your average employee makes $50K/yr.  That means you pay them roughly $25/hr.  You have a server crash that makes your network inaccessible for 12 hours while your IT provider scrambles to figure out a solution.  If you do the math a 12-hour outage would cost you $15K in hard labor costs. You pay your employees to make you money.  Conservatively you want an employee to bring in at least 3x in value to your organization.  If they can’t be productive they can’t add any value.  During that same outage, they could have potentially brought in $45K in revenue.  So with our example of a 12-hour outage, we have $15K in hard costs as well as $45K in opportunity costs.  Downtime is expensive.

Now What?

Don’t wait!  Today is the best day that you will ever have to improve your business IT solutions.  Staying with a lousy provider and hoping they will get better is a dream and a myth.  They’re like a terrible relationship that you just can’t get out of for some reason.
